Shizuoka Broadcasting Appoints Konohana Sakuya to Host TV Channel's Opening, Closing Program

This marks the first time a VTuber has been appointed to conduct a TV channel's opening and closing broadcast in Japan.

The Shizuoka Broadcasting System (SBS) in Japan has appointed its own VTuber Konohana Sakuya to do the TV channel's opening and closing program, effective June 1 this year. This marks the first time a VTuber has been appointed to conduct a TV channel's opening and closing broadcast in Japan.

Sakuya, who debuted as the broadcaster's affiliated VTuber on June 2021 in collaboration with Unibirth Production, has been integral in promoting Shizuoka prefecture.

This was done in terms of cooperating with local companies to develop products such as tea, confectionery, and cosmetics, and appearing in an audio guide application for famous places in Kakegawa City in the same prefecture.

Most recently, she was appointed as an "awareness character" for the recently concluded mayoral election in Shizuoka City.

She was also appointed recently as an honorary public relations manager of Aliment Industry, a company that produces miscellaneous food items and packaged food.

The character inspiration for Sakuya came from Konohanasakuya-hime, the goddess that resides at Mount Fuji. At the moment, the VTuber has over 12,000 YouTube subscribers and over 5,000 Twitter followers.
